The second son of famous Japanese artists, Hodaka Yoshida was intended to study science while his older brother Toshi Yoshida would continue the family artistic tradition. However, in the immediate aftermath of World War II, science education was limited, and Yoshida pursued his own path as a modernist working primarily in hybrid print media. His career developed in abrupt stages, although it retained identifiable characteristics, especially his interest in the indigenous cultures encountered in extensive travels. “Landscape, Ninja Point” is within the period identified by the primary scholar of his work as “Mythology and Landscape,” which uses mass media images and collage. Yoshida typically mixed media; in this image he used traditional woodcut techniques with photo engraving.
