My name - Idia- is a Benin name and means "I come to stay." Queen Idia, who I am named after was a queen in the Benin empire who was incredibly brave and led her people to many victories. I brought with me, from Nigeria, a small bronze statue of queen Idia to always remind me of my roots, of the legacy from which I came, of the people who I represent. I feel a sense of pride, love for Nigeria, and empowerment by the resiliency of her people. I feel privileged to carry on the legacy and teach my child about the history of queen Idia and the Benin Empire.
